TCE Gaza achieves significant progress in fight against HIV/AIDS and TB

TCE Field worker in MozambiqueAlthough rarely covered in the media, tuberculosis remains one of the top ten causes of death worldwide, and is the leading cause of death among people living with HIV. Although there is effective medical therapy for the disease, treatment must be strictly adhered to for patients to fully recover, despite harsh side effects. In Mozambique, health systems struggle to both diagnose and successfully treat TB, and increasing rates of coinfection complicate the situation further. However, ADPP Mozambique is making important progress in reaching at-risk groups for coinfection of the two diseases across the Gaza, Maputo and Zambezia provinces.
The team is working with communities most at risk of infection to increase awareness around the diseases, support testing and counselling for suspected cases, and connect patients with health services and support for treatment. In 2016, over 30,000 people were tested for HIV, over 4,600 new cases of TB were identified. At year's end, over 1,000 of newly identified TB patients had been successfully treated. Through these efforts, the program aims to contribute towards a reduction in the national HIV prevalence rate and mortality among TB & HIV patients.
