Energy Facility Project in Guinea Bissau successfully concluded

Picture taken from Renewable Energy for Local Development in Bissora reportThe four-year "Renewable Energy for Local Development in Bissora" project was concluded at the end of 2016, marking a significant milestone for national member ADPP Guinea Bissau. The EU-funded project worked with 2,600 households across rural villages in the Oio region and installed solar energy in 51 community facilities as well as 39 water pumps for consumption and irrigation. Furthermore, 7 new processing centres were constructed equipped with processing machines for commonly-used crop varieties such as corn, peanut and rice.
The new installations mark the first time that the villages access to energy services for the community. Prior to the project, water was manually drawn from the well, mostly by women. Schools, mosques and health centres depended on kerosene lamps for activities after sunset, and there was no access to televised news or entertainment for communities. And grain processing was generally done by hand, also mostly by women.
Preliminary feedback from participants suggests that the installations have contributed to an increased sense of cohesion in communities, particularly for young people, as well as a significant reduction in women's workload. "I have more energy now," explained Domingas Chas from Culucunhe village. "My body doesn't hurt at the end of the day anymore."
